Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875) is considered to be a Romantic sculptor whose naturalistic portrayal of animals gives them the spirit, action, and freedom of the wild. The Corcoran Gallery of Art has a significant collection of Barye bronzes, most of which were acquired in the last part of the 19th century: William Wilson Corcoran, the founder of the Gallery, encouraged the acquisitions committee to purchase 120 Barye bronzes. The text has 85 black and white illustrations, while the catalogue section has illustrations of items not already shown in the text.
