If there is one image that sums up the spirit of Hong Kong it is the passion of the raceday crowd. But then racing has been a part of the Hong Kong story ever since the first Governor permitted a malarial swamp to be drained on 'health grounds' to form Happy Valley racecourse. And at a time when convention proscribed contact between European and Chinese, racing was one of the few social activities that brought the Hong Kong community truly together. Even in the dark days of World War Two, Japanese occupiers were at pains to continue racing, though to do so they had to resort to the desperate expedient of wooden horses. The race had to go on. Today, under the auspices of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, racing remains Hong Kong's largest and most popular form of sporting entertainment. It is also, uniquely in the racing world, a huge provider of charity funding, with millions each year going to support Hong Kong's social development. As the race goes on into the new millennium, this commemorative album provides the briefest of retrospects on the people, dramas and historical transformations that have made racing part of the lifeblood of Hong Kong for over 150 years. Text in Chinese.
