The large number of Italian paintings in the Kress Collection -- there are nearly 1200, dating from the thirteenth century to the eighteenth -- has made it a matter of practical convenience to catalogue them in three volumes. This first volume covers the period from the thirteenth century to the middle of the fifteenth, with the addition of paintings done in the second half of the fifteenth century, which continues to represent the early Renaissance traditions of Florence, Siena and Ferrara. Among the major artists represented are Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Francesco Cossa, Domenico Veneziano, Duccio, Gentile de Fabriano, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Giotto, Giovanni di Paolo, Benozzo Gozzoli, Fra Filippo Lippi, Sassetta, Cosimo Tura and Marco Zoppo. Each artist is accorded a brief biography followed by a critical and detailed catalogue of his paintings. The present volume comprises 425 pictures, all of which are reproduced; the illustrations are augmented by a number of striking details. With 451 illustrations, including 17 color plates.
