In this first book to be published on this subject in any language, the author introduces the reader to a strange group of relics classed somewhere between applied art and folk art. The hunters' powder-flasks were made from the antlers of the red deer indigenous to an area covering the Carpathians and extending northwards to the Baltic and southwards to the Balkans. They were mostly used in the territory of the former kingdom of Hungary. The 40 color plates illustrate the technical skill and traditional artistry of the craftsmen who made these powder-flasks in the Carpathian Basin, while the 31 black-and-white line drawings show details of the structure and ornamentation.
