From household names such as J. M. W. Turner to the all-but-forgotten George Travers, and through the hierarchy of genres from high art to animals, fruit, flowers, sea and landscapes, the five hundred nineteenth-century paintings in this volume form about half of the V & A's complete collection of oil paintings. Many of the nineteenth-century paintings covered here were given to the museum by its founders -- the earliest example was the remarkable Sheepshank gift in 1857. Entries are arranged alphabetically by name of artist, and the majority of the paintings are illustrated. Brief biographical notes are included, with a note on the circumstances of the work's commission, details of its later history, and, in some instances, its physical condition. 22 of the paintings are illustrated in color, the remaining in black and white.
