From the middle of the seventeenth century to the late eighteenth, while the Parisian ebenistes were the most prestigious masters, Noel Hache, from Calais, and his descendants, Thomas, Pierre, Jean-Francois, and Christophe- Andre, based in Grenoble, comprised a dynasty of cabinetmakers whose talent and invention competed with the masters of the Saint-Antoine suburb. Presenting and analyzing more than a hundred pieces of furniture, this book places the Hache's work in the aesthetic context of the eighteenth century, focuses on establishing a new chronology of furniture, and clarifies attributions. This is the catalogue of an inaugural exhibition in October 1997 at the Musee Dauphinois in Grenoble. Profusely illustrated almost entirely in color.
